When a Song Strikes a Chord

Yes, the pun was intended. I like to pretend I'm clever.

Situations like Haiti are heartbreaking and inescapable. They are tragic and yet they unite the world. Isn't it ironic how it takes a tragedy to inspire unity, sometimes even among enemies.

Haiti is just another in a long list of world tragedies. Genocide, slavery, child trafficking, the sex trade, war injustice and on it goes. Sometimes it all just seems overwhelming. How can we possibly make a difference? How can we keep ourselves from becoming jaded and accepting of such heartache?

I think we just have to start somewhere. Start with one. Filter through the mass of need and find one person or one group that you can help. Send a check, donate food to a local shelter, volunteer, share the organization's mission with friends.

I am a fan of BarlowGirl's music and found a song I love on their latest album. I believe that the lyrics hold some of the answer to these kinds of tragedies. I believe that love is the major force of change in the world. There is not much accomplished for good in this world without it. I also believe that where there is a lack of love you will find some of the greatest tragedies. Love is like air. A necessity. We were made for it and without it we wither and die within ourselves. We lose hope, we accept degrading circumstances as if we deserve them. But love can make all the difference.

Love is Marching
I was told when I was young
That anyone could change the world
It wouldn't come by power or strength
But through the ones who choose to love

Cause everyone will pass
And when we've breathed our last can we say
We have lived for more
Did we live to die for love?

Can you feel His heart beating?
The sound of love that's marching on
And when our hearts begin to break
Along with His, this world will change

Love is marching to His heartbeat
